In Drive, his book about motivation,Daniel Pink states :  “Our 'default setting’  is to be autonomous and self-directed.”  Pink calls self-direction Type I (or intrinsic) behaviour.  The main motivator for Type I “is the freedom, challenge, and purpose of the undertaking itself; any other gains are welcome, but mainly a bonus”.

However, our society and schools focus on motivating individuals with extrinsic desires and external rewards.  He calls this Type X behaviour and when students are motivated by extrinsic factors, they are less likely to pursue further the Type X activity on their own.  

“If you promise a preschooler a fancy certificate for drawing a picture, that child will likely draw picture for you— and then lose further interest in drawing.  Yet in the face of the evidence—and as the world economy demands more non-routine, creative, conceptual abilities—too many schools are moving in the wrong direction…. We’re bribing students into compliance instead of challenging them into engagement.  

Emily Dickinson wrote her entire life.  Only after her death, did her relatives seek a publisher for her poetry.  Fame and wealth did not drive Emily or fuel her passion for verse.  

In the video below, a teacher demonstrates the power of allowing students the freedom and the time to explore challenges worthy of ones time.
